The shape of peony brushes are said to resemble the flower in full bloom. The bristles are attached in such a fashion as to cause them to splay out, creating close to a half-sphere of surface – ideal for creating soft wafts of color with dye on yardage, or to push dyes through stencils, as in sarasa dyeing.
Initially, to set the position of the bristles, the brushes are stored in sand. It’s not the least bit unusual to have a little sand fall out during use.
The brown-bristled ones tend to be a bit stiffer than the white, both deer hair. I offer the white online. If you are interested in the brown version, feel free to contact me.
