Pigments play an important role in Japanese dyeing techniques, originating in the highly refined techniques of Okinawan bingata. Okinawa, as well as Japan, is fortunate in having a very broad range of colors available in their natural mineral deposits.
Pigments are not limited to minerals. A great many are lakes – color precipitated out of both plant and animal-based dye sources.
This indigo pigment is called suisenhonai and is the finest quality indigo Persicaria tinctoria pigment made in Japan. It is used in producing quality block prints and textiles. A little goes a very long way. It is not appropriate for use in indigo reduction vats.
Currently sold in 10g packets, it will soon be available in a 100g size.
