Hanafuda is a card game played in Japan and often associated with gangsters. This portrate is of Junko Fuji, a popular actress famous for her leading role as a gangster in Japanese yakuza films of the 1960s. Her films are still quite popular today. Her name is written in the upper right hand corner of the hagoita. The peonies on her kimono mimic the design of the tattoos she sported in films.

 

Excellent good condition, probably date of construction, mid 1960s.

Wood paddle, hand painted, top quality fabrics and construction. Handle covered in velvet.

Silk chirimen kimono and Hakata-ori obi.

Approximately 30" tall.

A rare and delightful find for Japanese film aficianados!
