S3065 Fukusa—Japanese Gift Covers
John Marshall
Fukusa are used in Japan to
cover gifts, but not to wrap them. The covers
are always returned to the owner and so may
be used over many generations. Over time
these became more and more elaborate with
work commissioned from famous artists and
weavers using simple materials or truly opulent
weaves, traditional themes or contemporary
allusions to popular poems of the day. The
lecture will include how these covers are
constructed and used and will delve into the
inspiring range of techniques and designs
employed.
Materials fee: $0.00. Level: All.
