Advanced Garment Design
original designs by John Marshall

For the past fifty years I’ve enjoyed creating unususal garment designs to show off my dyed textiles. My designs were carried for twenty years by Bergdorf Goodman in New York and Obiko in San Francisco. They  have been featured in solo exhibitions sponsored by the US State Department as well as the Embassy of Japan.

This will be the first time I am offering a course that focuses on my own original designs.

In this course we will delve into all the possibilities, how to prepare and preserve the colors along with several projects to help you to become well-grounded in the techniques as you begin your own explorations.

level one
Level one starts out with the basics of how to plant and harvest your dye. The rest of the program focusses on using the raw Persicaria tinctoria to create an amazing array of blues–the pale watery blue of a desert sky, the intense cornflower blue of a robin’s egg, and of course the blue of a starless night.

This format, spread out over several months, allows you to work with John at the appropriate times of the growing season. We’ll start out with the seeds John will supply to you, covering all the steps in getting your plants started. We’ll collect leaves at their peak to work on a wide variety of projects, and finally harvest our last batch of plants to dry for winter use and gather the seeds in anticipation of preparing for next year.
