Tsutsugaki
Tsutsugaki, which means cone drawing, is the preferred technique among Japanese artists working on large or fluid designs. Working in a manner somewhat similar to writing “Happy Birthday!” on a cake with frosting, the rice paste is applied directly to the surface of the fabric. The immediacy of this approach allows for spontaneity and a greater degree of dynamic energy of line.

Tsutsugaki on silk. Natural and aniline dyes. Early 1900s.
We’ll spend the first day in an intensive session surveying the many different approaches to working with a cone. We’ll delve into the use of traditional paper cones as well as a wide range of alternatives.
Two weeks later we’ll meet again online to address any technical issues that you may need help with, now that you’ve had a chance to try your hand at it. It’s also a great opportunity to see what others in the class have come up with. As time allows, I’ll present a survey of the work I’ve done in this area and offer additional pointers for working with Western-style garment shapes.

You’ll get the most out of this information-packed class if you’ve taken any of my katazome classes in the past, or have experience working with rice-paste resist.
